Nashville City Paper (Online Column), CD Review >>
Bole 2 Harlem, Vol. 1 (Sounds of the Mushroom) does the same thing, this time through production vision of David Schommer, who also plays several instruments and joins vocalist Maki Siraj as the principal players. This duo take traditional Ethiopian themes and incorporate them into bustling frameworks that intersperse bits of rock, reggae, R&B, even some hip-hop influences, while kora player and vocalist Balla Tounkara adds plenty of African music flavor. This is joyous, often frenzied and constantly changing material, as adventurous at times as the most outside jazz, yet it also offers beautiful melodies as well. 01/29/07 >> go there
