The Music of the Spheres
National Geographic redefines world music

National Geographic isn't just for dentists' offices anymore. The National Geographic Society's online arm is expanding traditional notions of "world music" with the release of GeoRemixed: Big Beats for a Small Planet, a download-only compilation of underground gems and unlikely hybrids. OMFO (Our Man from Odessa), the Shukar Collective, and Slavic Soul Party! represent the Balkans; X-Plastaz & Kid Sundance, Bole2Harlem, and Vieux Farka Toure & Yossi Fine expand upon hip-hop and Afro-pop traditions; and outfits like the Jewish-Latino collective Hip Hop Hoodios and the German-Chilean acid-reggaeton iconoclast Señor Coconut further blur map points. Helping you in the quest to collect more stamps in your audio passport, National Geographic's world-music site also features charts from guest DJs like Karsh Kale and Six Degrees founder Bob Duskis. And for those who like their field recordings raw, master phonographer Chris Watson — formerly of Cabaret Voltaire, and known for his eerie, avant-garde nature recordings on the Touch label — recently traveled to the Galapagos to capture its sounds for an upcoming TV documentary on the Ecuadorean islands. Visit the show's website to listen to excerpts of his work: frigatebirds, sea lions, and tortoises, oh my!
