Andy Palacio and the Garifuna
Watina (Cumbancha)

Belize-born and bred Andy Palacio originally became a star on the world beat scene playing Punta Rock, a synthesized and sequenced-up modern take on island's traditional music. On Watina, Palacio and producer Ivan Duran get back to Garifuna's roots with a stripped down collection of swaying rhythms and call and response chants.

Created by the merging of escaped slaves from west Africa with the region's native Caribe and Arawak cultures, Garifuna culture is well represented y Palacio and a multi-generational, all-star lineup. Ayo Pa teams Palacio with 75-year-old Paul Nabor on a haunting song  of loss that leaves the scent of the Caribbean sea despite lyrics in Garifuna's melange of Spanish, French, West African and native Caribe languages. Baba's wake-like chanting is equally moving. 02/20/07
