Music is like language. Ever changing, it takes on the influences of neighboring rhythms, it leans towards what's popular and current fads, it incorporates new ideas and even new technologies.
Some of the changes catch-on and make such an indelible mark on the original genre that it is changed forever or - once in awhile - becomes a new genre of its own. Other influences either don't really work or shine bright for a moment then quickly die a quiet death.
That's one of the things I like so much about Bio Ritmo's Bionico. The band stays true to the essence of 70s style salsa but brings so much innovation to the genre that it leaves one eager to see what comes next.
