There's really nothing that anyone can cite in the popular arena that prepares you for the vocals and music presented on Tibetan Chants for World Peace (White Swan), which features The Gyuto Monks Tantric Choir. The songs from four minute invocations to nearly 25-minute multi-part suites with crashing cymbals, twin horns blaring and various instruments ultimately giving way to poignant prayers.

There are times when the numbers are solemn and slow moving. Then they'll quickly become more passionate in the chanting and playing. Equal parts cries for salvation, expressions of thanks and jubilant cries and shouts, this is one disc that grabs you from the first moments and holds your attention throughout, no matter which direction or turn the arrangements might take.

The Tibetan monks didn't even make any recordings heard on these shores until 2001, and they don't exactly cut sessions every day. No matter what music you enjoy or prefer, there's no doubt that they you won't hear anything else this year that sounds as idiosyncratic or as moving as Tibetan Chants for World Peace. 10/30/08 >> go there
