PRI's The World, CD Review >>
Finally today, the winds of the Skeleton Coast take us to the sounds of Chopteeth.
Chopteeth is a 14-piece Afrofunk big band.
And while most of the members live in and around Washington DC, the sounds are distinctly West African.
They're inspired by the late Nigerian Afrobeat master Fela Kuti.
In fact the name Chopteeth comes from a Fela Kuti song. It means 'crazy fool' in Yoruba.
One song is called Struggle. It's from the band's debut CD: Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band.
In addition to following the musical sounds of Fela, Chopteeth also follow his message of social and political action.
