Les Yeux Noir (Sunday, Davis Discovery Center)
Although Les Yeux Noirs (Dark Eyes) honed their acts in Paris, the band’s gypsy klezmer arm reached across Europe to Rumania and Armenia. Like sponges, these wandering gyspy and klezmer styles sucked up any rhythm or melody that happened to be in the neighborhood. The band’s name comes from one of guitarist Django Reinhardt’s favorite tunes. So, you’ll get whiffs of gypsy jazz. You’ll hear instruments you’ve never seen before, like the cimbalom. With the quirky rhythms of this nomadic music, the one thing you won’t hear is laid back. Soulful, yes but it’ll be hard to sit still for this show. 02/12/04
