Balkan Beat Box Snapshot

Balkan Beat Box was formed in 2004 by Ori Kaplan, former member of Gogol Bordello, and Tamir Muskat, producer of J.U.F.’s  “Gogol Bordello vs. Tamir Muskat” and drummer for Firewater and Big Lazy. Balkan Beat Box blends electronic music with hard-edged folk music from North Africa, the Middle East, the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

Their 2005 debut album on JDub Records was hailed by The Denver Post as “a sonic masterpiece.”  This collective's exciting mélange of international sonic rhythms and ideas has ignited a huge following among underground music fans in the US on the heels of a major burst of acclaim in Europe and Israel.

Balkan Beat Box is steeped with an intense lifetime of research into their own non-Western roots as well as other cultures. A quasi-circus event, BBB performs with a core of 6 musicians, collaborating with artists from Bulgaria, Morocco, Spain, Israel, and Turkey who draw on a variety of styles from around the world. Every event keeps the audience guessing what the next surprise will be.

“Gypsy is the definition of a soul, not a color or place.  It’s a take on life.” – Tamir Muskat in SPIN, Jan. 2007
