- By Jane Blumenfield
Guitarist Habib Koite, the biggest pop star of the West African nation of Mali, has made fans of Bonnie Raitt and Joan Baez, who recetly turned up to see him and his band, Barmada, play at Yoshi's in Oakland, California. "I would drink your sweat," Raitt told Koite afterward by way of a compliment. If he had wanted to reciprocate, Raitt had plenty of her own sweat after boggieing with Baez in the aisles throughout the show. Koite also gave the audience an impromptu Malian dance lesson between songs. "There's Hendrix, Stevie Ray and now Habib," Baez said. Koite and Bamada will tour clubs this fall. 09/30/99
