Saturday Star, CD Review >>
By John Sakamoto
On which the son of the legenday Ali Farka Toure transforms the U2 track by replacing the almost monolithic thrust of the original with a subtle, sinuous rhythm. The effect is to reverse the 10 per cent build-up/90 per cent release ration of U2's version so that the song'sviolence seems to be constantly threatening to break through the surface, while rarely doing so. A highlight of a Red-Hot-styled complilation featuring African musicioans performing in both English and their native tongue.
