DAVE HOLLAND QUINTET Critical Mass |Dare2] Boy, musicians are good these days. Acoustic bassist Dave Holland's Quintet is loaded with compositional and instrumental talent, but it's the unit s mastery of intangibles like nuance, dynamics, and musicality that make it one of the most capable bands in jazz ever. There are few instrumentalists with the harmonic and rhythmic sophistication of Holland's primary soloists, saxophonist Chris Potter and trombonist Robin Eubanks, and drummer Nate Smith and the Inimitahle Holland unflappably shore up the duo's remarkable interplay. Vibraphonist Steve Nelson rhythmically blankets the tricky tunes in an ethereal timhre, offering a soothing poultice for the band's searing up-tempo numhers. A beautifully recorded disc, too.
