The Latin Quarter
At Wednesday's El Museo del Barrio gala, it was Ruben Toledo's turn in the spotlight. Upon entering the Mandarin Oriental, guests were directed to a basket full of fans that the crafty Cuban had painted and signed for the occasion. Then one of his two canvases in the silent auction, "Latins in Manhattan," went for $15,000. The group portrait stars a who's who of fashion notables, Latin (Carolina Herrera, Narciso Rodriguez, Edmundo Castillo) and otherwise (Simon Doonan). "I think I look quite sinister," said the English-born creative director of Barneys New York, apparently relishing the depiction.
In between courses, guests danced to the sounds of local bossa nova band, Jose Conde y Ola Fresca, as well as the sultry inflections of French songstress Arielle Dombasle. "I grew up in Mexico," said the John Gallianoclad chanteuse, who flew in from Paris specifically for the event. "I was raised by Latins, so when El Museo called me to do this, I came." 05/01/06
