The latest jazz album, smooth jazz album, and smooth jazz singles charts, plus -- Guitarist Ilya Lushtak, a fixture on the New York scene for a decade, is one of a growing group of jazz musicians taking all aspects of business into his own hands. Music editor Tad Hendrickson touches base with Lushtak about the record label he founded, Lineage Records, and the lineage the label is designed to preserve. In the news, Blue Note is underwriting the broadcast of the syndicated program Listen Here!; Dallas smooth jazz KOAI is no more; Martin Shee is DJing for National Geographic; and a museum of African-American music is planned for Newark, NJ. In music and industry news in brief: Ravi Coltrane and Matt Balitsaris will perform a new children's album; Shout Factory! will have digital files from the Biograph and Black Top labels available; and the Zawinul Syndicate brings fusion to JALC. Reviews include Roger Kellaway, Ray Charles, John Patitucci, Marcus Strickland and Bill Anschell. And don't forget...our new college jazz and world music charts are now in each issue. 10/09/06
