Tuesday (Feb. 16), 8 p.m., Mershon Auditorium
Tinariwen began as comrades in a bloody desert rebellion and turned into the Sahara’s musical ambassadors. The group’s origin story is almost as fascinating as its music, a hypnotic combination of droning guitar grooves, drumming, poetry and singing. It’s been described, aptly, as “desert blues.” Patrons will be in for a special treat, as frontman and founding member Ibrahim Ag Alhabib is joining the group for its current tour, though he was absent from recent North American visits. However, they should be prepared to remain on their feet: The concert is standing-room-only. Tickets are $15, $13 for students and Wexner Center members; order by calling 614-292-3535 or visiting wexarts.org. 02/11/10 >> go there
