Dr. Rhythm, CD Review >>
Either I'm in a very good mood (sitting in the garden on a sunny day, sewing), or Bonga just got a lot better. His new album is so consistently good I may have to go back and listen to his other records. He is backed by a small versatile combo, Semba Master, that uses accordeon sparingly and cavaquinho on three tracks. This gives the album a more Brasilian feeling -- which means my expectations from it are lower! The title cut "Kaxexe" reminds me of Dida Banda Feminina. The songs are well balanced between ballads and up-tempo jaunts. His whiskey-smoked voice occasionally sounds so tired it makes you want to snooze too. For dozing on a sunny afternoon, it's perfect. 05/06/04
