Post-Gazette, Heads Up Intl./Ladysmith Black Mambazo - No Boundaries (CD) >>
Enjoy the intricate rhythms and harmonies of South Africa’s renowned Zulu group, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, as they once again cross borders with the tasty No Boundaries. Teaming up their trademark a cappella sound with the strings of the English Chamber Orhcestra. The result is a dozen tracks off classic Mambazo pieces and classical masterpieces. The opener, “Rejoice” sets the tone, followed by Paul Simon’s “Homeless,” an outstanding interpretation of “Amazing Grace,” plus an African-flavored version of Bach’s “Jesu, Joy Of Man’s Desiring.” With arrangements inspired by the early classical and baroque masters, listeners can revel in cuts as, “Dona Nobis Pacem,” the dance-inspiring “Umzuzu Nayi Ujesu,” and a Zulu lullaby “Walil’ Umtwana (The Child Is Crying).” This album is released to coincide with the group’s upcoming three-month tour of the United States. 01/14/05
