Malians seem to know the most direct path to the hearts of latter-day Afropop fans, and singer-guitarist Habib Koite may supply a few of the reasons why.  He’s the latest pop synthesist to make traditional fare wax contemporary, though admittedly, his studio records tend to outshine his performances.
