If contemplating ties between American blues music and Malian rhythms piques your curiosity, the elegantly crafted compositions and soothing, bilingual vocals of West African guitar virtuoso Habib Koité will satisfy it. After leaving a career in engineering to pursue music, Koité, who hails from a long line of Khassonke griots, backed up his innate storytelling skills with his mastery of the flute, guitar, and maracas. Since teaming up with Bamada — a group of musician friends from his childhood — Koité has become one of Putumayo's best representatives, seamlessly blending African, American, and flamenco styles together to show he's making use of those engineering skills after all. 03/01/05 >> go there
