Mali's Gabib Koite, meanwhile, is a more conventional social-critic-with-guitar figure. Drawing on the griot traditions of the arid Khasso region, he's like a younger, more tuneful Ali Farka Toure, with a touch of '70s folk supremo Pete Seeger. While some find his approach a touch polite, this is an appealingly gutsy set, propelled by the clattering talking drums, burbling balafons and jangling guitars of his band. While Jacob's audience lies inevitably in the West, Koite's plaintive messages really do speak to a large, educated, but increasingly disillusioned sector of Africa's youth.
