Sarasota Herald Tribune, CD Review >>
The fifth CD by Malian singer/guitarist Habib Koite is unfailingly pleasant from start to finish, full of tasty melodies and clean playing.
But somehow, it never seems to catch fire in the way that you want world music to.
Part of the problem is that the tempo stays pretiy much the same throughout, but even in the ballads, the emotional content just doesn't seem to be there, despite Koite's gorgeous and soulful singing.
The CD sets a comfortable and gentle tone, and doesn't waver from it which is wonderful if that's the kind of mood you're in.
But even with African instruments and foreign lyrics, the music feels overly familiar. New Age meets Third World.
