Mali high Guitarist and vocalist Habib Koite could have been Mali's gift to engineering; instead he's gifted audiences throughout the world with his mad musical skills, blending styles culled from through out his country, including danssa, a rhythm from his native town of Keyes, and doso, an older musical tradition. The result - an effervescent, meditative hybrid - comes together nicely on last year's Foly! Live around the World (World Village) - and has won the artist fans among countryfolk such as Toumani Diabate and U.S. roots mavens like Bonnie Raitt.
