Smother, CD Review >>

Putumayo World Music assembles a compilation featuring some of Mali’s most intriguing and groundbreaking musicians. Two of my personal favorites are on the album in Issa Bagayogo and Habib Koite & Bamada contributing three songs among them. You can really hear the influence of American Southern blues on “Ouili Ka Bo” by Idrissa Soumaoro with its hopping-trains harmonica performance. The diversity of the album’s sounds showcases Mali’s emerging scene that often finds traditional Malian music merged with other traditions such as electronics, reggae, blues, and Latin. As with many of Putumayo releases portions of the proceeds are donated to Oxfam America, which supports development projects in Mali.
