Globalization, the ongoing and increasing international integration of markets for goods, services, labor, and capital, has many vocal opponents. But routine economic exploitation of developing nations and the universal omnipotence of Western pop culture is not the definition of "One World" that enlightened people are prepared to live with. Each of the artists appearing on this CD has demonstrated a strong sense of national identity and a heartfelt commitment to social activism. A few were also involved in choosing tracks for this compilation, which includes some previously unreleased material and suggests fifteen thought-provoking alternatives to the status quo, some more radical than others. Among the talent on hand are Spanish pop star Manu Chao, Lee Scratch Perry and the Skatalites from Jamaica,  Algerian singer/songwriter/gadfly Idir, the Grammy-winning and Platinum selling American superstar Moby and Femi Kuti of Nigeria, whose father (the great Fela Kuti), uncle and grandmother were all outspoken opponents of government corruption and paid dearly for it. Musically, the set is first-rate and the accompanying book is bound to inspire interesting conversations -- and perhaps even a little grassroots action.
