Omara Portuondo Sentimiento (Escondida)
The commercial juggernaut of the Buena Vista Social Club unleashed a dizzying number of imitators, but few labels have explored the recordings of the Club’s members before celebrity. An excellent entry in the Cuban Essentials series unearths gems from Omara Portuondo, one of Cuba’s most versatile vocalists. The stylistic range here is mind boggling — from the ’70s orchestral pop a la José José of “Eso No Lo He Dicho Yo” to the gritty sal-sa pathos of “Agua Que Cae Del Cielo.” Omara’s thunderous voice dominates throughout.
