RUBEN GONZALEZ 'Momentos' 4 stars
When Ruben Gonzalez died aged 84, the world lost one of its great pianists: his story - of suddenly being out of retirement as part of the Buena Vista Social Club - is wonderfully heartwarming. This compilation goes back to the 60s, when he was playing with one of Havana's big orchestras, but it beautifully reflects the scope of what he could do. He had a big sound, and used vaulting intervals as he hurtled up and down the keyboard: his playing was a perfect blend of exuberance and restraint. It's worth remembering that this was the man who first thought of introducing a piano into a 'son' ensemble.
