Five Live: Music
By: Marty Hughley Friday, July 28, 2006 1. Shawn Colvin, Dar Williams--They've toured together before and they likely remain well-matched models of the literate, earnest, emotionally incisive folk-pop singer-songwriter. 7 p.m. Friday, Oregon Zoo, 4001 S.W. Canyon Road; $19 advance, TicketsWest; 503-224-8499.
2. Buzzcocks--Among the great early punk progenitors, Buzzcocks may be less storied than the Sex Pistols and the Clash, yet no less essential and arguably more fun. With singer/guitarists Pete Shelley and Steve Diggle still at the wheel, the band careens around as thrillingly as ever. The Adored and the Strays make fine, fitting openers. 9:30 p.m. Friday, Dante's, 1 S.W. Third Ave.; $13.50 advance, TicketsWest.
3. KUFO Rockfest--A re-formed Alice in Chains (with singer William DuVall of Comes With the Fall in place of the late Layne Staley) headlines this 11th annual celebration of radio-ready heaviosity. The bill also features Seether, Buckcherry and Evans Blue, plus such locals as Velabonz and Smoochknob. 1 p.m. Saturday, Columbia Meadows, 63701 Columbia River Highway, St. Helens; $37.50 advance, TicketsWest.
4. Ska Cubano (pictured)--The Caribbean has bred a wealth of vibrant musical styles, and several of them -- principally Jamaican ska and Cuban son, but also cumbia and calypso -- come together irresistibly in the sound of this British/Cuban collaboration. Don't bother bringing the lawn chair for this one: dancing will be all but mandatory. 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oregon Zoo, 4001 S.W. Canyon Road; $9.50 advance, TicketsWest.
5. The Coup--Like a dirtier, more radical cousin to Spearhead's Michael Franti, fellow Bay Area hip-hop progressive Boots Riley lays down funky protests against George W., "bankers in sheeps' clothing" and other contemporary ills, while simultaneously insisting on getting his party on. 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Berbati's Pan, 10 S.W Third Ave.; $14 advance, TicketsWest. 07/28/06 >> go there
