Andy Palacio & The Garifuna Collective
"Watina" (Cumbancha) Grade: A
The Garifuna are an ethnic group descended from Caribbean slaves who now live in scattered locations along the South American coast especially Belize, whence comes this enormously exotic amalgam of African, Island and South American music. Garifunan singer-songwriter Palacio's voice, both gruff and airy, leads a nimble ensemble of percussion, guitars and voices through a program that sounds like some heavenly marriage of juju, Latin, samba and soca, studded with moment after moment of stunning beauty. Without a doubt the best world music album of the year.
