Tibetan Chants for World Peace
The Gyuto Monks Tantric Choir

Few sounds convey ages-old spirituality and power like the multiphonic chanting of the Tibetan monks of Gyuto, either alone or when joined by their traditional instruments, such as trumpets and cymbals. Mickey Hart has been involved in bringing their music to a wider audience for a long time, sponsoring the monks on their first U.S. tour in 1988, and this album represents recording sessions from their visit here in 2001.  Hart has done an amazing job at capturing the spiritual and musical essence of the multiphonic characteristic of the monks' voices. Frankly, their singing may send shivers up and down your spine!  The CD features one brief opening vocal-only invocation followed by three tracks that mix the choir's chanting with assorted instruments:  drilbu (a bell-like instrument), damaru (a small drum-like object played with one hand), cymbals, and the easily recognized Tibetan trumpets. For those seeking a wholly unique and transcendent listening experience, this CD should provide that.  In addition, proceeds from sales will go toward assorted gyuto and Tibetan charities. 02/01/09 >> go there
