When we heard Ocote Soul Sounds and Adrian Quesada were set to play at Pachanga this year, it immediately took us back to the time we saw Martin Perna(Quesada's partner-in-crime) and his Antibalas brainchild, when they played last year's Treasure Island Music Festival . The the sonic energy had us going crazy, moving to the deep beat, and loving every bit of the blaring accent brass.

Ocote's definitely another eclectic mix of soulful rhythm, and when playing live, it seems people can go on dancing forever—even when the groove slows down. The arrangement behind Ocote Soul Sounds comes together thanks to Adrian Quesada (Grupo Fantasma & Brownout) and Martin Perna (founder of Antibalas). That said, you might already get the picture here....

We caught up with Adrian Quesada at this year's Pachanga to talk a little about how Ocote Soul Sounds came together amidst his other projects, and it turns out to be a pretty good story. Very organic one could say, involving a road trip to Mexico on vegitable-oil, and a healthy pit stop in Austin. Martin and Adrian spent a short time together, but what came out of that pit stop in Austin seems to have seeded something deeper in terms of their own respective music.

Call it retro-latin-afro-jazz or whatever you like. In the end it's rich and vibrant music—organic even, in the way the collaboration came together. The latest album, Coconut Rock, can apparently stir up a little party around you, as much as it can bring on a more relaxed and chill-out vibe. Look out for Ocote Soul Sounds touring with Thievery Corporation later this fall....
