This summer, the Skirball Cultural Center is hosting its
FREE Sunset Concerts series. The free concerts take place on
Thursday nights at 8:00 p.m. and run through August 13, 2009.
Here is a look at the upcoming concerts that make up this
series:
Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, and Väsen: Thursday July 23, 2009, 8:00 p.m.
– Two celebrated architects of American bluegrass, Mike
Marshall on mandolin and Darol Anger on fiddle, join forces
with Sweden’s influential instrumental trio Väsen. Together the
five virtuosos create a dynamic soundscape that bridges the gap
between the fiddle and dance tunes of Appalachia and the
nyckelharpa (Swedish key fiddle) and polskas of Sweden.
Gadji-Gadjo: Thursday July 30, 2009, 8:00 p.m.
–L.A. premiere! Led by accordionist Mélanie Bergeron and also
featuring violin, mandolin, clarinet, guitar, double bass, and
percussion, this beloved Quebec-based band reinvigorates the
Roma and klezmer traditions of Eastern Europe with diverse
world influences. Co-presented by Yiddishkayt.
The Wild Magnolias: Thursday August 6, 2009, 8:00 p.m.
–Get a taste of Mardi Gras in summertime! Thrilling audiences
with their upbeat music and ornate costumes, the Wild Magnolias
are an ebullient example of the mania that envelops New Orleans
on Fat Tuesday. Well known for their on-stage flamboyance and
funky roots music, the ensemble not only brings fans to their
feet but also celebrates the life and culture of the Mardi Gras
Indians.
Omar Faruk Tekbilek Ensemble: Thursday August 13, 2009, 8:00 p.m
–Master player of various Middle Eastern reed instruments,
lutes, and percussion, Omar Faruk Tekbilek is one of the most
sought-after Turkish/Middle Eastern musicians living in the
United States.
