Garifuna artist Aurelio plays two shows at The Getty Center
January 11th, 2011 9:28 pm PT

When I received a message that a Garifuna artist was coming to perform in southern California, I will admit that some research was required. Now, I am not here to give a dissertation on Garifuna. Suffice it to say that it is a person whose heritage is a blend of Caribbean, West Indian and west African.

While I can't (truthfully) list Garifuna music expert on my resume, knowing the origins helped me know what to expect from the music. Laru Beya (Next Ambiance, 2011) by Aurelio is an album that would be classified in the world music category, but somehow that seems insufficient. There is a definite African feel in the guitar, similar to Oliver Mtukudzi or Thomas Mapfumo. Combine that with instrumentation and rhythms that are both Caribbean and African, and what you have is Laru Beya. Do I understand the lyrics? No, but that's the great thing about music. It is truly a universal language. You don't have to understand the lyrics to want to move to the melodies and the rhythms. And let's face it, African and Caribbean music are heavy on the rhythms that get you moving.

Could I say anything more about the music? Probably, but this is music you need to hear for yourself. So here's what you do. Check out a couple of the songs from Laru Beya and see what you think. And if you like what you hear, loyal reader, I have good news for you. Aurelio is playing not one, but two shows at The Getty Center on Saturday (at 7:00) and Sunday (at 3:00). Admission to both shows is free. That's right. You have two opportunities to see this artist perform and it won't cost you a penny.
