Here are 10 things you should do for the week of Jan. 16

1. Tango Buenos Aires: "Forever Tango" has left the Bay Area, but here comes another version of the smoldering dance style. This acclaimed Argentine company performs what some say is as an authentic version of the tango as you can find.

Details: Presented by Cal Performances; 8 p.m. Jan. 21, Zellerbach Hall, UC Berkeley; $22-$52; 510-642-9988, www.calperformances.org.

2 Comedy Brains: The Marsh Berkeley is launching this new comedy series Jan. 22 with a trio of yucksters, including up-and-coming San Franciscan Janine Brito, former Bay Area-favorite Betsy Salkind (author of the solo show "Anne Frank Superstar") and Zahra Noorbakhsh, who will perform an excerpt from her show "All Atheists are Muslim."

Details: 8:30 p.m. Jan. 22, series continues at least through February; the Marsh Berkeley; $15-$35; 800-838-3006, www.themarsh.org.

3 Company C Contemporary Ballet: The Walnut Creek troupe opens its ninth season Friday with what it describes as two "emotionally charged" world premieres -- "Indoor Fireworks" by artistic director Charles Anderson and Benjamin Bowman (set to music by Elvis Costello), and "Ominous Rumblings of Discontent" by Maurice Causey (set to music by avant garde composer and artist Mikhail Karikis).

Details: 8 p.m. Jan. 21-22; Lesher Center for the Arts, Walnut Creek; $18-$40; 925-943-7469, www.lesherartscenter.org. Company C also performs Jan. 29-30 at Castro Valley Center for the Arts, Feb. 12-13 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in S.F., and March 19-20 at Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts; more information is at www.companycballet.org.

4 Aurelio Martinez: The Honduran guitarist, singer and composer (he's also a congressman of that country) performs the music of his Garifuna heritage; a fertile mix of Caribbean, African and West Indian sounds that should resonate with anyone fond of Afropop music. His new album, "Laru Beya," comes out Jan. 18, the same day he headlines at Yoshi's in San Francisco.

Details: 8 p.m.; $20; 415-655-5600, www.yoshis.com.

5 "Miss Potter": Renee Zellweger stars in this film about the British kids author and conservationist Beatrix Potter, who created Peter Rabbit and other indelible characters. The film gets a special screening at San Ramon's Front Row Theater Jan. 22, which includes a presentation from the Beatrix Potter Society. Proceeds from the event benefit the American Association of University Women.

Details: 7 p.m.; $25; 925-973-3343, www.ci.san-ramon.ca.us/parks/theater.

6 Very First Concerts: This music series aimed at young listeners returns Jan. 17 with a South American-themed program featuring the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra and the Andean music outfit Trio Chaskinakuy.

Details: 11 a.m. and noon Jan. 17; Crowden Music School, Berkeley; free; 510-559-6910, www.crowden.org.

7 Tommy T's Special Olympics fundraiser: Comedy Central regular Rachel Feinstein brings her sharp mix of absurdism and social commentary to this worthy benefit.

Details: 7 p.m. Jan. 16; Tommy T's Comedy and Steakhouse, Pleasanton; $20-$30; 925-227-1800, www.tommyts.com.

8 Paula West: The supremely gifted Bay Area singer has not only a great set of pipes but a knack for giving old standards a fresh, often sassy, feel. She's kicking off an eight-week run at the Rrazz Room at San Francisco's Hotel Nikko at 8 p.m. Jan. 18.

Details: Performances are Tuesdays-Sundays through March 13, call for show times; $35-$45 ($65 for Valentine's Day show); 800-380-3095, www.therrazzroom.com.

9 Wayne de Silva: The Hawaiian-born former Bay Area tenor sax man returns to his stomping grounds for a show celebrating his new CD, "Marble Park." His band includes Bay Area talents Mark Levine on piano; bassist John Wiitala, bass; and Eddie Marshall on drums.

Details: 4:30 p.m. Jan. 16; Jazzschool, Berkeley; $15; 510-845-5373, www.jazzschool.com.

10 "Ruth Asawa: Roots of an Artist": Bob Toy's documentary about the San Francisco artist and activist, whose sculptures, fountains and murals have been seen all over San Francisco, gets its premiere Jan. 21 at the de Young Museum in San Francisco. Toy and members of Asawa's family will be on hand to answer questions about the film and Asawa's art and tireless work to promote arts and creativity over the years.

Details: 7:15 p.m.; de Young Museum's Koret Auditorium, Golden Gate Park, S.F.; free; 415-821-4515, Ext. 26; www.deyoung.famsf.org, www.ruthstable.org. 01/16/11 >> go there
