Hailed as the heir to Fadista legend, Amalia Rodriguese, Mariza has captivated listeners worldwide with her remarkable voice.  She comes to the Napa Opera House April 6.  Born in Mozambique, Mariza was a baby when her family moved to Portugal.  Immersed in Lisbon's fado houses (fado is a music of emotions, Portugal's equivalent of the blues, tango and flamenco), Mariza began singing even before she could read.  Her father sketched out cartoon stories to help her remember her lyrics.
Her 2002 debut CD achieved Gold statues in Portugal - where Mariza was proclaimed best fado voice.  Now she's earning global kudos as well, including nominations as best European Artist and Best Newcomer Artist for BBC Radio's 2003 Awards for World Music.
"Mariza'a voice is a gorgeous, evocative instrument, and she sings with Bravura and power - her performance is nothing short of genuine revelation," Billboard Magazine. 04/04/04
