Good Times, Mariza >>
The elegant sounds of Portuguese fado singer Mariza will soon be making their way from the shores of Lisbon to the shores of Santa Cruz for a select performance as part of a one-month U.S. tour. For those unfamiliar with the style, fado (pronounced fah-doe) is a traditional music from Portugal, which is full of lush melodies, mournful lyrics and deep emotion. In the words of Mariza herself, "we don't sing it, we feel it." Fado is reminiscent of the quieter songs from The Gypsy Kings and The Buena Vista Social Club. In other words, it's a bit depressing, both spacious and languid. What else would you expect from a music who's name loosely translates as "fate?" Mariza is a rising star within the fado world, and has a new album, Fado Curvo, which reached no.6 on the Billboard World Music Chart. 04/08/04
