Mariza, a Mozambique-born singer, breathes fresh life and excitement into Portugal's fado tradition on this 2001 selection. Gem-like songs are delivered with heart-wrenching singing and subtle acoustic guitar and bass backing. The bonus CD, recorded at the WOMAD festival, shows she can cut it live too. Chris Stapleton
