Ottawa Citizen, CD Review >>
Imperious, cunning, giving you enough space to fall in love once again before crushing you once again, fate is a tough foe. He wins, every time, and his presence lends a grand melancholy to all of life. With her second album, Lisbon's musical enchantress Mariza (a single name suffices) has set to music contemporary and classic poetry of Portugal, providing a fresh take on that country's musical tradition of fado, which means "fate." The standard fado accompaniment of Portuguese 12-string guitar, acoustic guitar and bass is fleshed out with a little piano, trumpet and cello, equal parts elegance and passion, the ideal setting for Mariza's dark voice and urgent delivery. You may not understand a word she sings, but you know everything that's in her heart.
