Mariza "Fado Curvo"
Times Square (www.timessquarerecords.com)
At 29, Mozambique-born Mariza is fast becoming one of the the most popular fado singers in and beyond Portugal (where she grew up and lives). It remains to be seen whether she'll one day supplant fado queen Amelia Rodrigues, who died in 1999 and has yet to be topped, but Mariza's second album, "Fado Curvo," suggests she has the potential to do just that.
Blessed with near-perfect pitch and an unusually expressive voice, she is well-suited to negotiate the technical and emotional intricacies of fado, the intensely mournful Portuguese style named after the Latin word for doomed destiny. Her captivating performance on this 11-song album, sung entirely in Portuguese, should appeal to anyone who values music that captures the drama of life without a hint of affectation.
