HIP-HOP. Hipsopkhasene Solomon and Socalled ...
By BRYAN PATTERSON.
Hipsopkhasene Solomon and Socalled (Piranha Music) * * * In short//Truly odd IMAGINE, if you can, a traditional Eastern European Jewish wedding that turns into a stomping hip-hop party.
This is one of the weirdest dance parties you are likely to attend. Throughout the night, behind the increasingly feverish music, you can hear the sounds of the wedding ceremony, ancient seven blessings ritual, smashing glasses and the weeping bride. You can almost smell the pickled cucumbers.
The DJ raps in old-school Yiddish, and the energetic samples and loops join with clarinets, trumpets, accordions and fiddles, piano, Hammond organ and sounds of the wedding guests.
This is the first project for Sophie Solomon, a Jewish fiddler with attitude, and rap producer Socalled.
The party seems to go on all night (it really runs a little under an hour).
