‘Hiphopkhasene’ is an invitation to a marriage of the liturgical and the lyrical, hip hop meets klezmer, trans-Atlantic style. Sophie Solomon, the fair fiddler of London’s fusionists Oi-Va-Voi, ragga jungle DJ in her spare time, joins forces with Socalled, New York’s leading Jewish beat-writer, an artist to be reckoned with for sheer sense of measure and inventiveness. Surrounded by an impressive cast of renowned featurings including David Krakauer, Frank London and Michael Alpert, the young couple have succeeded in a rare and unique experiment. A clear step forward for klezmer music, a new window opening onto today’s Jewish youth culture, firmly rooted in its heritage yet resolutely open to the modernity of this world.
