San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble
"La Noche Buena"/ World Library Publications
Joyful discovery is just one of the pleasures found in this magicial disc, which offers sacred Christmas music from 16th and 17th century colonial Latin American, including songs from Mexico, Peru and Bolivia.
This is a stunning seasonal work of five centuries old "new" music. You'll find Aztec, Incan, Mayan, European Spanish and West African accents, melodies and rhythms. The septet uses indigenous percussion, hand drums and hand claps to back its angelic singing. The ensemble presents shimmering vocals that are haunting and exultant.
A treat for all music lovers; this would make even a Grinch feel reverent.
