EVENT BALLAKE SISSOKO Also Playing: Vincent Segal and Sidi Toure
No matter your native tongue, the blues transcends any language barrier. Malian singer-songwriter Sidi Toure is no exception, even though to the average isolationist American, his foreign lyrics are as clear as gobbledygook. What is clear is the straight-shooting sadness of his acoustic musings. The barrier creates a distance from the listener, which beefs up the emotion. Toure’s a long-distance buddy going through a world of hurt, but nothing can be done, because he might as well be on another planet. It’s probably for the best that his lyrics aren’t in English, considering the layer of mystery they add to an already enigmatic set of songs. Toure’s at his best when he’s lost in translation.
