Shepherd Express, Album Review >>
Rooted in traditions of the Near East while embracing new routes to timeless music, Azam Ali sings with quiet power, remarkable range and emotional depth. On her new CD, she performs lullabies from the region—songs of shadow and light as if sung by mothers imparting a sense of life's tragedy to their children. Although many tracks are indebted to classic mid-20th-century Egyptian orchestras, the music is a seamless marriage of electronica with acoustic instruments, the layered drone of a synthesizer blending with the strumming of an oud. 04/07/11 >> go there
