Ann Arbor News, Zing is their thing >>
If a group that's been described as "The Gypsy/Klezmer boy band of a lost era'' sounds just like the musical blast of fresh air you've been looking for, then check out Paris-based Les Yeux Noirs, at Power Center Tuesday night courtesy the Ann Arbor Summer Festival.
The band's name - it's French for "The Black Eyes'' - comes from the title of a Russian Gypsy tune made famous by Django Reinhardt in the 1930s. The sextet, also described as the Jewish Gipsy Kings, is led by two fiddle-playing brothers who whirl violins, violoncello, accordion, electric guitar, cimbalom, and electronic samples into a vortex of European sounds and images
Violinists Eric and Olivier Slabiak founded Les Yeux Noirs 10 years ago.
