Nashville City Paper, CD Review >>
17-year-old trumpet prodigy Boban Markovic's fiery playing is a highlight of The Promise (Piranha/World Music Network), a showcase for his father Boban Markovic's Orkestar. The group takes the brass band sound, adds some gypsy touches and recasts it into a Balkans musical setting on such cuts as "Latino," "Papigko," "Voz" and "Obecanje." While these pieces are designed more for collective interplay than solo statement, Boban's energetic and distinctive statements still make their impact within the unison passages, and are particularly spirited during those periods when he does get individual space. Its transplanted New Orleans marching band fervor blended with dashing gypsy arrangements and influences. 05/12/06 >> go there
