The music of Briga reflects a fully-embraced, multi-faceted identity: her father is Polish and her mother is Québecois, she was raised in Western Canada and now lives in Montreal. Her repertoire is a hybrid of songs written in French and English, all accompanied by her fervent violin-playing deeply rooted in the Easter European and Romani folk songs learned from the days her father played the piano to put his children to sleep.
Inspired from a year touring the Balkans playing Romani (Gypsy) weddings with Bulgaria’s #1 violinist and her mentor, Georgi Yanev, Briga brought new songs and ideas back to Montreal to perform and record with her band. Turbo Folk Stories was released in 2012 and has recently been nominated for Best Album – Pushing Boundaries at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, as well as Best Album – World Music at Québec’s music industry awards called the ADISQ Awards.
