Vieux Farka Toure Vieux Farka Toure
Winning debut from the son of Mali's late guitar maestro
As the familiar clang of desert blues guitar roll out, it's clear that Ali Farka Toure's is a worthy successor to his father - on the brace of tracks where the two play together, the join is seamless. More surprising is the confidence with which Vieux extends his musical heritage. Working with a US producer, he co-opts reggae on "Ana" and elsewhere throws in the odd clap of rock guitar. With fine young Maliam talents on board, and kora genuis Toumani Diabate there for a couple of duets, this is an impressive and, at times, magical beginning.
