Gazette, CD Review >>
Smooth warm tones and fluid Afro-beat from South African trumpeter Hugh Masekela, who, at 68, knows how to work a crowd, talking and scatting and vocalizing. The Boy's Doin' It live at the famed Market Theatre, celebrating post- apartheid with catchy trumpet hooks. Even before world music was a concept, Masekela was blending styles from town ships jazz and R&B to pop, disco and Afropop. He is in top form on this two-disc recording that includes some of his favorites - Grazing in the Grass, Stimela, Up Township and Mandela - which makes Live at the Market Theatre weighty revival album.
