Festival Director's recommendations for things to do in and around Calgary:

1. Listen to CJSW 90.9 FM and CKUA 93.7 radio as you’re getting ready to head to Prince’s Island Park to hear a bunch of festival and other fabulous artists.

2. Visit Cantos Music Museum to see, touch and hear their amazing instrument collection.

3. Check out the Glenbow, one of Calgary’s largest art galleries and museums.

4. Go trout fishing on the Bow River or rent a raft and float your cares away, from Bowness Park to the Zoo.

5. People here love their brunch joints. Some of the stand-out, centrally-located ones include Red’s, Diner Deluxe, Galaxy Diner, the Coup (vegetarian) and Avenue Diner.

6. Hang out at the Ship and Anchor patio on cool 17th Ave. SW for Caesars or pints.  Then walk down the avenue to take in urban sites, sounds, restaurants and shops. Finish the day off with a martini at Ming.

7. Enjoy regional organic food at the fine dining River Café in the middle of Prince’s Island Park.

8. See live original indie, roots and folk music at Local 522, Broken City, the Ironwood Stage and Grill, the Republik and the Marquee Room.

9. Have a picnic at Bowness Park or Stanley Park.

10. Bike, run or rollerblade on Calgary’s extensive 500-kilometre pathway system.

11. Take a walk in Nose Hill or Fish Creek Park.

12. Have a glass of wine and an appetizer at Vin Room, Milk Tiger, the Laurier Lounge or Kensington’s Wine Bar, all located centrally in interesting urban neighbourhoods.

13. Go canoeing on the Glenmore reservoir.

14. Skinny dip in the Elbow under the hot July sky.

15. Pick up some fresh local produce at one of many farmer’s markets: Calgary, Blackfoot, Crossroads.

16. See locals and visitors in their natural habitat as you stroll Stephen Ave and eat outside at one of many restaurant patios.

17. Purchase some original clothes, jewelry and art downtown at Fashion Central and Art Central.

18. Head 90 minutes west for a day to the Rocky Mountains and hike around Banff or Kananaskis. Climb Yamnuska to get your braggin’ rights. On the way there, drop into picturesque Bragg Creek for some lunch, then go by Elbow Falls on Highway 66 and keep your eyes peeled for moose, deer, elk, bear, cougars, wolves and other wildlife just 30 minutes from Calgary.

19.  Drive 90 minutes north/east to Drumheller for breathtaking Badlands scenery, the world-famous Royal Tyrrell Museum and the richest deposits of fossils and dinosaur bones in North America.

20.  Drive 2 hours south to Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

21. Head west along Cowboy Trail and hear live music at intimate venues along it in small towns Black Diamond, Turner Valley, Longview and Cochrane.

22. Take a step into the past at Blackfoot Crossing Historical Park, about an hours’ drive southeast of Calgary.   It’s a national heritage site that promotes and preserves the Siksika Nation Peoples’ language, culture and traditions.  Take a guided tour or spend the night in the tipi village.

23. Oh, and there’s a little 10-day rodeo (aka corporate Christmas) called the Calgary Stampede just before the festival that locals and tourists like to take in.
